A genus of motile, peritrichous, nonsporeforming, aerobic or facultatively anaerobic bacteria containing gram-negative
rods; it includes the species that can occur in urinary tract infections.

Providencia species have been associated with nosocomial (hospital acquired) urinary tract infections.
P. alcalifaciens, has been associated with some cases of diarrhea in children.
